Saltvik is the largest municipality in Åland, located in the north-eastern parts of main Åland. The most elevated parts of Åland started emerging from the sea 10 000 years ago. Today’s highest hills in Åland were first to appear as tiny skerries in the horizon. The first settlers came to Åland from the east 6 000 years ago. They settled in what is today known as Saltvik. The Saltvik stamp motif was photographed by Andy Horner and shows the view from the highest hill in Åland, Orrdals klint. Below the hill, we see the Saltvik archipelago stretching out.
