The stamp highlights the Jettböle idol, one of Åland’s most unique archaeological finds. The Jettböle idol has become a symbol of the Åland Stone Age. It was found in 1906 during the excavation of the 5000-year-old Stone Age settlement in Jettböle on Åland, which had been discovered by chance in 1905. The excavations revealed Åland’s first Stone Age settlement and changed the view of the prehistory of Åland. The significance of the clay idols of human figures from the Stone Age has been interpreted in various ways over the years, including as ritual objects.

Regarding the stamp,
the NOB said: ”This stamp represents the variety of all the flora and
fauna there is in the waters. The similarity between all the creatures
visible on the stamp and the ones that exist in the Dutch waters, is
big. Besides that, the stamp itself is full of detail of all the
different plants, fish, reptiles and invertebrates shown on the stamp.”
