Like the French post office, Andorra's Spanish post office has chosen a polychrome wooden virgin from the Romanesque period to illustrate the theme of "Sculpture".

This virgin appears on the first stamp (2 pesetas) and represents La Verge d'Ordino (The Virgin of Ordino) which is located in the church of Sant Corneli i Sant Cebrià in Ordino. This 44-cm virgin is the smallest in the Principality and dates from the late 11th and early 12th centuries.

The second stamp (8 pesetas) represents the Creu de les set banves [Creu dels set
braços], the seven-branched cross.

This Gothic cross with seven branches dates from the 16th century. It is located on the road between Prats and Meritxell. There is a legend associated with it, which you can read on the website of the Andorra Tourist Office.

Our Lady of Meritxell - In the late 12th century, on January 6, a wild rose in bloom was found by villagers from Meritxell going to Mass in Canillo. It was out of season and at its base was found a statue of the Virgin and Child. The statue was placed in the Canillo church. However, the statue was found under the same wild rose the next day. The statue was taken to the church of Encamp. However, as before, the statue was again found under the same wild rose on the next day. As in similar legends elsewhere, the villagers of Meritxell took this as a sign and decided to build a new chapel in their town after they found an open space miraculously untouched by the winter snows.
