Andorra is rich in Romanesque churches. In 1974, the French Post of Andorra selected two "Virgins in Majesty" from this period to illustrate the common theme of "Sculpture".

These reliquary virgins were carried in procession and then placed on altars or embedded in the tympanums of churches.

The first stamp represents La Vierge de Pal (the Virgin of Pal, or it's exact name the Verge del Remei in Catalan) which is kept in the church of Sant Clement in Pal. This 12th century sculpture was restored in 1988. The virgin is holding an apple - symbolic of power - in her right hand.

The second stamp shows La Vierge des remèdes de Santa Coloma (the Virgin of the Cures of Santa Coloma) from the 13th century and kept in Andorra's oldest church in Santa Coloma.

The child Jesus holds the apple in his left hand and extends his right hand in a gesture of blessing. Mary is carrying a container interpreted by tradition as the "vase of heavenly ointments".

The stamp depicts two blown-glass ointment jars found in the Roc d'Enclar archaeological site, located on a rocky promontory above the town of Santa Coloma, during excavations carried out between 1979 and 1982.4 cm high, this type of jar was used to hold medicinal or cosmetic products such as oils, essences or perfumes. The coins were found in burials and date from between the 8th and 10th centuries. From their shape (pear-shaped belly and long neck ending in a rounded lip) and material, we can conclude that they were made in Islam, probably during the Emirati period.

Charlemagne was king of the Franks, Lombards and Emperor of the West and laid the foundations for the medieval kingdoms of Europe.
Legend has it that the emperor Charlemagne continued the task of driving the Saracens back to the Iberian Peninsula, which his grandfather Charles Martel had begun. His passage through the Pyrenees was a response to the request for help from the inhabitants of the Valira valley, who had had to flee before the arrival of the Arabs. After many battles, the emperor and his son Louis the Pious succeeded in liberating this territory with the help of its inhabitants. To thank them for their courage and help, the two rulers granted various prerogatives and privileges to the Andorrans, expressed in the Carta Pobla, including their sovereignty and the designation of these lands by the name of Andorra. From this document, Antoni Fiter iRossell, who was in charge of finding the origins of the country, made Charlemagne the founder of Andorra by taking up this legendary story that could have been legendary story, which may have been based on older accounts. Later, almost a century ago almost a century ago, the Carta Pobla was considered apocryphal.

NOTE : In 1980, the French post of Andorra already issued a Europa stamp depicting Charlemagne. The common theme was "Famous people" that year.
